Rules to Seizing the American Dream: Robert F. Smith’s speech
Near the end of May, several media outlets, social media sites, bloggers & vloggers alike stormed the internet by sharing the resounding news of Robert F. Smith’s generous financial gift. A gift that impacted 396 Morehouse college graduates lives by eliminating a significant amount of collegiate debt. In case you have not heard of Robert F. Smith, don’t live under a rock any longer. Learn more about this private equity and investor titan HERE.
Now, Robert isn’t some black magical genie freely granting monetary wishes to destined ones. Historically Robert has been a promoter of education, taking ownership of a masterful skill, and giving generously. So $40 million dollars in grant money is not a once in a lifetime occurrence from him or his family. He’s an active speaker at many events both in the past and currently covering financial literacy principals to sharing his views on improving blight and underserved communities with key skills. Although the financial news from Morehouse College is one to definitely applaud and cheer, DO NOT miss golden nuggets left in Mr. Smith’s speech, Rules for Seizing the American Dream. Since I am a nerd and natural born change agent, I have listed Robert’s nuggets below:
Nothing replaces actually doing the work.
Take thoughtful risks.
Be intentional about the words you choose.
Always Know: YOU ARE ENOUGH!
We all have the responsibility to liberate ourselves and others.
I have listed his rules above, but it is up to you to extract the essence of the message (by watching a 35 minute video above) and determine how they will shape your life culture.
Robert’s rules are not for everyone, but they are rules he has used to acquire all his rights as an American citizen and become an American billionaire. These rules are also ones I have adopted within my own ethic of work daily. My core values guide my course of life and I hope you adopt rules or key principles that will guide achievements in your life as well.
“The opportunity for access should be determined by the fierceness of your intellect and the courage of your creativity.” -Robert F. Smith
